MALTESE CROSS--The insignia of the Knights of St John during the crusades. Out of necessity, the knights also served as firefighters putting out fires caused by flaming catapult/trebuchet shot. On their way home from the Holy Land they stopped in Malta. Many of the knights decided to stay. Today the Maltese Cross is a common feature on fire fighter's uniforms.
